What is a Haiku?

Last week we were learning about syllables and we learnt to write haiku.

Haiku are a traditional Japanese form of poetry. A haiku has 17 syllables- five in the first line, seven in the second line, and five in the third.

Here are some haiku written by Arlen- Room 4’s Haiku King!

Lower Moutere

Lower Moutere,
Small kids, big oak trees, near to
Upper Moutere.

Mars

Mars is a planet,
Olympus moons erupting,
Mars rovers driving.

The Orca

Big, vicious Orca,
munching up seals and bones,
red water in the sea.

The Salmon’s Life

Small, yummy salmon,
leaping up the cold rivers,
ending up as food.
